The Batman was directed by Matt Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) and is a reboot of the iconic film franchise. The film is set during the second year of the Dark Knight’s career of fighting crime and follows his battle with the serial killer known as the Riddler. The loaded cast includes Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and Colin Farrell as Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot/Penguin. In 2017, it was announced that Ben Affleck would no longer be starring and directing the upcoming Warner Bros. project. Unlike Affleck’s Batman, Pattinson’s Caped Crusader will not be a part of the DCEU.

Keoghan took to social media to share a behind-the-scenes photo from The Batman. In 2020, the 28-year-old was cast as Stanley Merkel, a Gotham City cop who was James Gordon’s partner in the comics. The character was created by Frank Miller and first appeared in 1986’s Dark Knight #1. Merkel frequently helped Gordon track down the Dark Knight and in Batman: Dark Victory #6, he was found dead on St. Patrick’s Day.

Keoghan’s Merkel could play an important role in the upcoming HBO Max The Batman spin-off Gotham PD. The series will reportedly have the same gritty tone as the film and will focus on James Gordon and the Gotham City Police Department. Joe Barton (Giri/Haji) took over showrunner duties following Terence Winter’s exit last November. Reeves previously stated that Gotham PD will serve as a prequel to the film and will be set in the Batman Year One period. Barton noted that it will examine the corruption in Gotham City and is told from the POV of a dishonest cop.

The Batman isn’t the only big-budget film Keoghan is slated to star in. The Irish actor will next be seen as Druig in Marvel’s The Eternals. The blockbuster was directed by recent Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and follows a group of superheroes that must reunite after staying hidden for thousands of years. Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington, and Salma Hayek round out the all-star ensemble cast. The film is part of Phase Four of the MCU and is expected to be released in the theatres this November.

The Batman is scheduled to be released in theatres on March 4, 2022.
